Zimbabwe: Galz staffers' trial postponed
14th June 2010

FELUNA NLEYA

The trial of two staffers from the Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) Ignatius Mhambi and Ellen Chademana has been postponed to June 30 and July 1 respectively.

Mhambi and Chademana are facing charges of contravention section 26 (1) (b) of the censorship and entertainment control act chapter 10:04 after they were found in possession of pornographic material.

Jeremiah Bhamu of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Humana Rights confirmed that their trial would commence at the end of the month.

They were arrested at their offices in Milton Park last month and spent seven days in police cells before they were subsequently placed on $  200 bail each.

As part of the bail conditions, the two report at Harare Central police station’s CID drug section twice a week.

They surrendered their passports and were also barred from travelling more than 40 kilometers outside Harare without authority.

The arrest of the two sparked an outcry with local, regional and international human rights organisations complaining about their arrest and the manner in which police treated them while in custody.

According to the ZimRights Forum a Zimbabwean based human rights group, this case had exposed Zimbabwe's weak judiciary.

The group noted with concern the torture the two claim to have endured at the hands of the police during their detention.
In the court papers, the two said that they were beaten with bottles on the knees while in some instances, they were forced to sit in one position for long periods.

Chademana said she had to endure sleepless nights in the filthy cells.
