Our Work 

SALC strengthens the rights of prisoners in the region through training, advocacy and litigation. In addition, with local partners SALC works with international bodies such as the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) to further the rights of prisoners. Currently, the Prisoners' Rights Programme primarily works in Malawi and Zambia.

Decision Expected in Challenge to Mandatory Death Sentence for Cirminals Convicted of Aggravated Robbery

In Zambia, SALC is working with attorney, Mr. Abraham Mwansa, in supporting a challenge against the mandatory death sentence for anyone convicted of aggravated robbery. The case, Mbao & Njambe v The People, was heard late last year and we are awaiting the judgement in the matter.


The Right to Bail for Terminally Ill Remandees Challenged in Malawi

The current case law on bail and ill-health in Malawi dictates that bail will only be granted where the applicant can show that the terminal illness arose while in prison. SALC is challenging this interpretation of the law in a matter involving a minor who is incarcerated while awaiting trial. Working with attorney Mandal Mambulasa, SALC will argue that this is a mistatement of domestic law and that the position runs contrary to the international treaties that Malawi has ratified.
